Adult Migrant English Program
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is provided by TAFE Queensland to help migrants and refugees to learn how to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
Eligible migrants and refugees can study English with the AMEP for up to 510 hours or until they reach functional English, whichever comes first.
All AMEP students enrol in the Certificates in Spoken and Written English (CSWE). Certificate levels include:

Pre Beginners - Pre CSWE I

Beginners - CSWE I

Post Beginners - CSWE II

Intermediate - CSWE III
TAFE also offers AMEP funded specialist classes supporting students who missed out on education before arriving in Australia. The Special Preparatory Program provides:

an extra 100 hours of intense support for English language and literacy needs.

an extra 400 hours for young people between the ages of 15 to 24 years who have had less than 7 years of schooling.
AMEP study options
AMEP students have a choice of the following study options:

full time or part time tuition in a classroom setting

home study through:
-
distance learning

TAFE can provide a trained volunteer to work with the student at their own pace, either in the home or another suitable place.

All AMEP students also have access to self paced elearning modules online.
Childcare for AMEP parents
Refugees and migrants who are attending AMEP funded classes are entitled to access childcare provision if they have children younger than school age, or children waiting to begin their first year of school.
TAFE Language and Literacy Services (TELLS) administers the childcare provision. The childcare payment covers only basic fees and only the period of time the parent is attending classes.
Eligibility for AMEP
You may be able to attend free English classes with the AMEP if you:

hold a permanent visa
-
have little or no English
And:

are an adult (18 years or older) or,
-
are less than 18 years of age and are not attending school. (These students may be eligible within their first 12 months of arrival to Australia.)
Access to the AMEP is extended to some temporary visa holders as specified in the legislative instrument for 'English Courses for Holders of Certain Temporary Visas'.
If you are not eligible for free AMEP classes, you can still enrol in State funded TAFE English classes for a small fee. For more information contact your local TAFE institute.
Enrolling
AMEP is free for eligible participants. TAFE AMEP classes are offered in more than 40 campuses across Queensland.

You can register for classes within 6 months of the date your visa commences.

You can start classes within 1 year of the date your visa commences.

You have 5 years to complete classes.

These timeframes may be extended in special circumstances.
