Adult literacy and numeracy courses
TAFE Queensland offers a range of adult literacy and numeracy courses at each of the institutes, including most campuses and off campus sites. Various modes of delivery are available:
- day or evening part-time classes
- full-time courses
- individual tuition with a volunteer tutor
- courses integrating literacy with vocational training
- literacy and numeracy support for apprentices and trainees.
The first step is to contact a TAFE institute to arrange an interview with a literacy teacher. The interview provides the opportunity to discuss and assess literacy and numeracy requirements to develop a suitable training plan.
Literacy and numeracy training is delivered through accredited curricula - Certificates I and II in Vocational Access.
Students are exposed to a wide variety of literacy and numeracy tasks and activities to ensure a range of skills are addressed. Texts and tasks relevant to the student's needs and interests are used in the learning process.
Volunteer tutor training
Volunteer tutor training courses are delivered at all TAFE institutes. Those interested in becoming a volunteer tutor can enrol in an accredited part-time course to acquire the basic skills and knowledge required for adult literacy learning.
Tutors may then work in a class, or one to one with a student, and receive on-going support in their role.
Distance literacy learning is also available through the Open Learning Institute of TAFE (OLI). The OLI can be contacted on (07) 3259 4155. Students are assisted in their learning through phone contact with tutors, internet access, audio tapes and printed material.
For more information on these course options, please contact the TAFE Queensland English Language and Literacy Services on (07) 3244 5488 or email tells@det.qld.gov.au
