Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)
Funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, the Adult Migrant English Program provides English language training for recently arrived migrants to assist in the development of functional English.
TAFE Queensland can offer a range of AMEP funded English language training options through a selection of Certificates in Spoken and Written English (CSWE) courses.
The AMEP funded courses that TAFE offer are:

English for Pre beginners (Pre CSWE)

English for Beginners (CSWE I)

English for Lower Intermediate (CSWE II)
-
English for Intermediate (CSWE III).
All of these courses have a computer component included. AMEP funded classes in Certificates in Spoken and Written English are offered at all TAFE institutes.
Adult Migrant English Program funded English tuition is available through:
- Formal day and evening classes
- Special Preparatory Program (SPP) for clients who are eligible
- Individual Learning Centres.

AMEP eligibility is covered by Federal Government legislation and policy.
AMEP eligibility requirements apply to:
English for Pre beginners (Pre CSWE)
English for Beginners (CSWE I)
English for Lower Intermediate (CSWE II)
English for Intermediate (CSWE III).
Who is eligible?
The Adult Migrant English Program is available to adult migrants (18 years old or over) for whom English is not the first language, and who have been assessed as not having functional English language skills. The program is provided free to the majority of clients.
The following categories of people are eligible:

newly arrived migrants or humanitarian entrants from overseas

migrants who arrived in Australia after 1 July 1991

temporary residents who hold a gazetted visa class
-
people who have been granted permanent residence in Australia since July 1991.
Clients need to register for their English language tuition entitlement within three months of arrival in Australia or grant of permanent residence and should start tuition within one year.
English language tuition may be delayed in certain circumstances.
Child care for under school aged children is available free to those clients who require it in order to attend Adult Migrant English Program class room tuition.
