Course summary

The Adult Learning Services at Tropical North Queensland TAFE offers English programs which cater for permanent, migrant residents of Australia wishing to learn to read and write English.  These programs are designed to develop social language skills at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

Location: Cairns, Innisfail
Dates: 2013:  Continuous enrolments.  February - June.  July - December.

Additional Fees and Charges

  • Migrant English programs are free for the majority of newly arrived migrants, who are eligible for up to 510 hours of English tuition under the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).  The AMEP is a Commonwealth Government initiative funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC)
  • Ask at your local Centrelink about the Education Supplement for this course.
  • Longer term residents pay nominal fees (between $7.50 and $27.00 per subject).
Entry requirements

Prospective students must be:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Permanent residents, of non English speaking backgrounds

All students must also attend an assessment interview.

Childcare
TAFE Queensland provides subsidised child care, where necessary, under the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to enable eligible students to study AMEP formal classes, conditions apply.  Childcare benefits are available for other students attending language classes.  Information and enquiries should be directed to their local Family Assistance Office in Centrelink.
