TAFE Queensland announces Make It Happen winner
Thursday, 29 March 2012
A Brisbane screen and media graduate is the inaugural winner of the 'Make It Happen' competition. The competition is designed to help TAFE students and recent graduates develop their careers, establish their own business or fund further study.
Deiter Dizon, who graduated last year from Southbank Institute of Technology with a Diploma of Screen and Media, has taken out the title and been awarded the $5,000 cash prize.
Department of Education and Training Director General Ms Julie Grantham congratulated Deiter and said he was a wonderful example of how TAFE can help young Queenslanders achieve their dream job or change careers.
"After working in the IT industry, Deiter decided he wanted a career in a more creative field," Ms Grantham said.
"He took up photography and graphic design before undertaking the TAFE diploma course to develop his skills further.
"Deiter now plans to start his own digital agency producing creative digital designs and web applications."
Ms Grantham said the "'Make It Happen' entrants were required to submit a one minute video via Facebook on how they would use the prize money to maximise their study.
"The standard of entries was incredibly high, including Deiter's video.
"Deiter applied his considerable technical skills in his video, clearly demonstrating his ambition.
"With the prize money Deiter intends to buy editing software, a new camera, lens and tripod and pay for business cards, website hosting fees and exhibition attendance costs."
The 'Make It Happen' competition's 43 entries attracted 1490 Facebook votes, with the judges reviewing the top ten voted entries to select the final winner.
In addition to the major winner, the judges selected five entrants as Highly Commended:
-
Jade Browne - Brisbane North Institute of TAFE
-
Matt Drewett - Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE
-
Peter Kim - SkillsTech Australia
-
Sharni Pinder - Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE
-
Leanne Tennant - Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE.
