Queensland shines at Skills Olympics

Queensland trainees and apprentices have shown off their skills at the 2010 WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Brisbane, taking out 20 medals over the four day competition.

Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson congratulated the Queensland team for winning six gold, eight silver, and six bronze medals in their respective categories in competition against some of Australia's finest young tradespeople and skilled workers.

The 2010 WorldSkills competition, or Skills Olympics, brought together more than 500 of Australia's best apprentices, trainees and students to test their skills in almost 50 categories.

"To win a medal in the national competition is an outstanding achievement, and highlights the calibre of training being delivered in Queensland."

"I would like to congratulate all the members of the Queensland team. They should be as proud of themselves as we are of them," Mr Wilson said.

Queensland's WorldSkills 92 member team included 75 open competitors and 17 high school students competing in the vocational education and training in schools categories plus 14 team leaders who provided leadership and support over the three day event.

"This event has given Queenslanders an opportunity to see first hand the high level of skill needed for a diverse range of occupations.

"For the Queensland competitors these are skills developed through our states world class education and training sector," he said.

The 2010 WorldSkills competition medal winners are in the running for selection in the Australian team to compete at the International WorldSkills competition in London in 2011.
